Malibu Country, Reba’s New Sitcom Picked Up by ABC

“Congrats to everyone associated with ‘Malibu Country‘! We got picked up!!” Reba McEntire tweeted over the weekend, elated that her new sitcom will now officially run for at least one season. “We’re going to have so much fun! Can’t wait to get to work!”

ABC had already agreed to the pilot of the show, which stars the country legend as a divorced mom of three who moves from Nashville to Malibu, Calif., after discovering her country-star husband was cheating on her. Reba’s character and her kids will have to adjust to the very different world of Malibu, where she’ll also try to resurrect her own music career. Watch an extended preview of the show below.

“I miss the ‘Reba’ show so much, so it will be great to get back into the TV world again!” Reba posted on her website, referring to her self-titled sitcom that ran from 2001 – 2007 on the WB and CW networks.

Iconic actress Lily Tomlin will play Reba’s mother on the show. Other castmates include Sara Rue, Julietta Angelo, Justin Prentice, Jai Rodriguez and Owen Teague.

Reba will also act as an executive producer on “Malibu Country,” alongside her husband Narvel Blackstock and former “Reba” producer Kevin Abbott, along with Mindy Schultheis, Michael Hanel, Pam Williams and musician Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics. It’s not yet known when the first episode will air.

Liam Neeson Will ‘Walk Among the Tombstones’

Liam Neeson is set to star as Matt Scudder in A Walk Among the Tombstones, the Scott Frank-scripted adaptation of the Lawrence Block book series, reports Deadline.

“In ‘A Walk Among the Tombstones,’ Neeson plays Scudder at the time he’s an ex-NYPD cop and unlicensed private detective and recovering alcoholic. He’s hired to find the kidnapped wife of a drug dealer. In the process, he discovers that the kidnappers have done this before and it has led to brutal murders.”

Block’s Scudder character was previously played by Jeff Bridges in the Hal Ashby-directed 8 Million Ways To Die. Double Feature Films partners Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher will produce with Danny DeVito and his Jersey Films.

The movie will begin production February, 2013 in New York and is the first film in a new three-year deal between Exclusive Media and Cross Creek Pictures to develop, finance and produce at least two films per year, with budgets up to $65 million. Each of the films will be released through Universal Pictures, which has a slate distribution deal with Cross Creek.

Jennifer Lopez is leaving “American Idol” at the conclusion of the talent show’s current season, sources tell E! Online’s Marc Malkin exclusively.

J. Lo has been dropping hints in recent weeks that her departure from the show could be on the horizon. Wednesday, in an interview on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” she said that, “I miss doing other things. It really does lock you down.” She has served as a judge on the Fox singing competition show for the past two seasons, but J.Lo is now taking on many other projects, including an international concert tour with Enrique Iglesias. The multi-talented entertainer hosted a Latin American singing competition show, “Q’Viva: The Chosen” with her estranged husband Marc Anthony this past TV season. She’s also starring in the film “What To Expect When You’re Expecting.”

J. Lo has been expressing ambivalence about returning to “American Idol” since Season 10. In June of 2011, after her first season, she said to BBC1, “I haven’t been forced to make a decision and I’m glad about that because honestly I’m very on the fence about it … I had an amazing time doing it and I loved it but I have a lot other things happening, and it’s going to come down to me making a choice of what I want to do for the next year and we’re not really at the breaking point of ‘You have to make a decision right now!’ I’m just really enjoying the time of just waiting and seeing.”

Of course, “Idol” producers were able to lure Lopez back for Season 11 with a rumored $20 million one-year deal, a considerable raise from her Season 10 contract, which was for $12 million.

Will Ferrell’s ‘The Campaign’ – Trailer

Voting has opened on the first trailer for the new Will Ferrell and Zach ‘The Hangover’ Galifianakis comedy The Campaign.

The story follows North Carolina politician Cam Brady (Ferrell), who has run for governor five years unopposed. That is until Marty Huggins (Galifianakis) shows up: Yeah, Will Ferrell just punched a baby. Ferrell and Galifianakis aside, it boasts a pretty impressive-looking supporting cast: Jason Sudeikis, John Lithgow, Dan Aykroyd and Brian Cox. Directing The Campaign is Jay Roach (Meet The Parents, Austin Powers), whose last movie was the very mediocre Dinner For Schmucks.

The Campaign looks to have about as much comic potential as you could expect from a Will Ferrell vehicle, with Cam Brady having some shades of Ron Burgundy about him, and Zach Galifianakis looking on good form as his utterly clueless opponent. But Zach going beardless seems so wrong!

The Campaign is due for release on August 10th in the US, and September 28th in the UK.

Donna Summer Dead: Queen Of Disco Dies At 63

Donna Summer died Thursday morning after a battle with lung cancer. Lovingly named the “Queen of Disco,” the 63-year-old was in Florida at the time of her death, according to TMZ. Born LaDonna Adrian Gaines, the 5-time Grammy award winner rose to fame in the ’70s with hits like “Hot Stuff,” “Bad Girls” and “Love to Love You Baby.”

Following the news of Summer’s passing, the singer’s family released a statement saying that they “are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy.”

TMZ also reports that Summer was working on a forthcoming album at the time of her death.

“RIP #DonnaSummer – dined with her a few months ago, and she sang Amazing Grace to guests with stunning power. Great lady, wonderful talent,” Piers Morgan tweeted about the late singer.

Summer is survived by her husband, Brooklyn Dreams co-founder Bruce Sudano, their two children — Brooklyn and Amanda — and her daughter, Mimi, from a previous marriage.

Chad Smith Reunites With Chickenfoot for Boston Show Encore

Chad Smith rejoined Chickenfoot tonight (May 16) at Boston’s Orpheum Theatre, appearing with them in concert for the first time on the tour in support of their latest album, ‘Chickenfoot III.’ While Smith is an official member of Chickenfoot, Kenny Aronoff has been handling drums throughout this tour due to Smith’s involvement with the Red Hot Chili Peppers current road trek.

Earlier in the evening, during the main set, Sammy Hagar made a passing reference to Chad, joking that, “if Chad was here, I’d kick his ass.” Hagar, characteristically, said it with a knowing wink, foreshadowing the events to come before a crowd that thought it seemed like a random thing to say.

Shortly after the band left the stage following the main set, a man in a Kiss t-shirt and backwards baseball cap sat down behind Aronoff’s drums. Many thought at first that this was Aronoff’s drum tech but the complexity of what he was playing (and the stage lights coming on) caused the fans to realize that it was Smith, and went nuts.

The other three members of the band came back onstage and launched into ‘Oh Yeah’ from the first Chickenfoot album. Hagar then turned to the drummer and said, “Chad, you haven’t had this much fun all year and you know it.” The band then broke into a cover of Jimi Hendrix‘s ‘Foxey Lady’ with a bit of ‘Manic Depression’ thrown in.

Chickenfoot closed out the show with their new single, ‘Different Devil,’ followed by a tribute to the late Ronnie Montrose with a cover of ’Rock Candy,’ during which Aronoff came back on stage and helped on humorously on the cymbols. Hagar said that Smith was only the second drummer to get the beat on ‘Rock Candy’ right (the first being Montrose’s Denny Carmassi). All five musicians took a bow at the end of the night, during which time our reporter on the scene took the historic, if somewhat blurry, picture above.
